The Sleepy Dogs of Peru

Los perros soñolientos de Perú…

Like many of the Peruvian people, the stray dogs have to fight to survive.

Unlike the spoiled pets we know and love in the states – fixated on their masters, desperate to please – the dogs here seem to live on their own schedules, foraging for food, scurrying down sidewalks to their next destinations, and taking long naps on warm pavement.

Each seems to stick to a several-block radius, but it’s unclear which ones are considered pets and which ones fend totally for themselves. The healthiest-looking ones relax in store fronts and sometimes even indoors – the mangiest ones limp across crosswalks and bark into the wee hours of the morning.

To the locals, they seem invisible, but to some tourists, they are part of this country’s charm.
